26 June 2008 BBC wants £800,000 local video kittyThe BBC has unveiled plans for an £800,000 fund to source local video content from outside the organisation, as part of a £68 million investment in its local network. The corporation has now submitted its proposals to the BBC Trust, which is to carry out a thorough review and public consultation. The annual fund would be used to pay external news providers for video content, which it wants to make available on demand on its network of BBC Local websites. Regional newspaper groups recently slammed the BBC's proposals to expand its local services, as they fear that the public institution could undermine them by stifling competition with the unfair financial clout it would have at its disposal. The BBC also proposes to open up its content by allowing other local and community news sites to host its own local video content provided that the usage is fair, reasonable and non-discriminating. Other features would include links to external news sites, along with the facility in its local video stories to click on related stories hosted by other news publishers.
