Blog used as vital update on UK flood zone

A council in one of the worst flood-hit regions of the UK is blogging the latest news to update victims and the media in the wake of the worst flooding since records began.

Cheltenham Borough Council launched the blog to keep the media and the public up-to-date with rapidly changing news and announcements.

The blog is a departure from the council’s usual communication methods but the immediacy of it is necessary to keep people right up-to-date. The site has had more than 20,000 hits in the first four days.

It has been used to offer news and advice on a wide variety of issues from vital information about emergency water supplies to encouraging people to recycle their plastic water bottles. A letter of support from the Queen has also been posted on the blog.

The council's web development officer, Pete Riley, said that when the flood crisis hit the region the council decided to use a blog and update it via a hosted version of WordPress because it could not be sure that it would have a reliable electricity supply at its offices.

That way, he added, any of the team could update the blog from anywhere, including home computers if required.
