Boom year for national newspaper websites

The national newspaper websites are celebrating extraordinary year-on-year increases in readership, despite ending the year on a low.

Figures released by ABC Electronic (ABCe) reveal that all five of the national dailies it audits have suffered the traditional year-end slump in website visitors because of the festive period.

The Telegraph was worst hit, with its readership tumbling by more than 17% for the month to 10.55 million unique users. Nevertheless, according to the newspaper’s own figures, the website has seen an 86% increase in traffic since the same period the previous year.

By contrast, dailymail.co.uk was least affected by the holiday slowdown, closing the year with a decrease of just 5.5% in its monthly readership to 13.6 million users. And it’s been a bumper year overall for the tabloid’s online counterpart with a 115% boost in traffic for the year.

The Sun Online, Guardian Unlimited and Times Online also saw their audiences slump in the last month of the year, but all three were buoyed by strong year-on-year performances.

Guardian Unlimited enjoyed a 21% increase in readership for the year, and still tops the list of UK national newspaper websites with nearly 16 million unique visitors.

Both Times Online and The Sun Online registered handsome twelve-month performances, with increases in unique users of 30% and 45% respectively.
