16 June 2008 Bumper growth in online readershipNewspaper companies are seeing their online operations grow at double-digit rates, both in readership and advertising revenue, according to new research by a global organisation for the newspaper industry. The World Association of Newspapers, which represents the interests of 18,000 newspapers worldwide, has just published its World Digital Media Trends report looking into the latest trends in digital media advertising and circulation. And it predicts a bright future for news sites, with revenues from digital and mobile advertising expected to exceed $150 billion by 2011, representing a staggering twelve-fold growth in nine years. Technological advances will have a huge impact on newspapers' digital strategies, with broadband reaching nearly 540 million households by 2011, more than a ten-times increase on the 2002 figure of 51.4 million. The wireless customer base is also set to expand rapidly, with a projected three-fold increase from 1.1 billion subscriptions in 2002 to 3.4 billion by 2011. The report also revealed that number who access news from their mobiles has grown dramatically, from 945 million users in 2001 to 2.6 billion by 2006. Paris-based World Association of Newspapers, which was founded in 1948, is a non-profit, non-government organisation set up to defend and promote the press freedom and the economic independence of newspapers across the world.
