Google tightens policy on gambling ads

Google has revised its UK AdWords policy by extending a ban on online gambling ads to include sites that encourage betting - even though no money changes hands.

The move comes on the back of a rising number of gambling sites which use initial free-play options to attract customers. Users can then upgrade to pay-for gaming options.

Yahoo! and Google outlawed ads for internet casinos and poker services back in 2004.

Google's revision of the AdWords policy does not permit sites related to gambling such as online gambling tutorials, those offering play-for-fun features, tips, odds and handicapping, gambling software and eBooks, and those designed to drive traffic to online gambling sites, along with the likes of online bingo, sportsbooks and lotteries.

The ban comes as the UK is liberalising laws on gambling. The Gambling Act 2005 comes into force this September.

A Google spokesperson said that the company had carefully considered the issue and the differing views of its users. Although it supports freedom of expression, it believes the new policy is simpler for everyone to understand and more in tune with users' wishes.
