UK news websites should show PCC logo

All UK newspaper websites should display the logo of a media regulator in a bid to ensure the integrity of standards online.

The director of the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) has made the call after observing the debate over trust in broadcasting – which has been sparked by the premium phone-in scandals.

Tim Toulmin said it would be a good idea if newspaper websites displayed the PCC logo as a sign that they adhere to its guidelines.

He said it is not enough to subscribe to a system of regulation, it is important to publicise that fact.

Mr Toulmin added that the PCC has said before that it will encourage more newspaper websites to make clear that they abide by the press Code of Practice, which includes rules on accuracy, privacy and news-gathering. Doing so is in the interests of everyone: the website in question, the Commission and most importantly the person who may wish to complain.

Advertising their own responsibility in this manner, he added, is one way for publications to capitalise on the benefits of self-regulation and reinforce to consumers why they can trust the service.

He also said there were economic benefits to the online newspaper industry because international readers would appreciate British efforts to indicate trustworthiness.
