Sky search for citizen journalists

Sky News is turning to the public at large in a drive to provide extensive grassroots media coverage of the next general election.

The satellite news channel is forging a partnership with City University in a bid to find a postgraduate student to work closely with Sky News to develop the project.

The selected candidate will be tasked with building up a team of what could be several hundred citizen journalists, monitoring and mentoring them as they write and post content to the election news weblog.

Senior lecturer in electronic publishing at the London university, Neil Thurman, said that Sky wants to experiment with the format.

The university asked the channel to fund the PhD studentship, explained Thurman, as Sky was looking to make use of academic input and the university’s research in content generation.

He described the format as a series of blogs about the election with contributions from members of the public instead of Sky News journalists.

City University is looking for someone with a good knowledge of British politics, most likely a recent graduate in the area of journalism, who can bring something from their experience with Sky into their research.

The move comes just as competitors ITV launched their own citizen journalism website ITV Uploaded.
